Frequently Asked Questions

Products
Mains Powered or Battery Operated Overhead Machine?
The most important question is where do you want to shear your sheep?

Mains Powered
If you are set up by an electrical outlet, the mains powered Longhorn XT is the perfect choice giving you continuous use and is 50% more powerful than comparable machines.

Battery Operated
The Longhorn 12V 3.2 is the ideal choice for shearing on the go! Shear from a car battery or out in the field, or even connect to mains power using a transformer, making it the ultimate machine for convenience.

What else do I need to start shearing?
In addition, to your Overhead Machine, you will require a handpiece, driveshaft, combs and cutters. All of these are included within our Longhorn Complete Shearing Kits, so be sure to take a look at them.

Breed
For reference, finer wool sheep such as Texels and Suffolks and lustre wool such as Wensleydale and Teeswater take more power than more open wool sheep like Swaledales.
Solid or Flexible Driveshaft?
Solid Driveshaft
Solid Driveshafts enhance the speed of shearing by moving with the shearer and are more robust than a flexible drive. Solid drives are used on training courses and in competitions. They are the go to driveshaft for professional shearers.

Flexible Driveshafts
Flexible drivehshafts are low maintenance and allow movement when crutching or shearing in difficult conditions. Made from heavy duty materials, they are suitable for all shearing capabilities.

Choosing the Perfect Handpiece...
Bearing or Oilbath Handpiece?

Bearing Handpiece
Bearing handpieces are smoother running and ideal for contract use or shearing larger flocks. The bearings can be expensive to replace but this is generally avoidable if maintained correctly.
Bearing handpieces available – Red Arrow, Skorpion, Outback, Icon FX & Icon Cyclone.

Oilbath Handpiece
Oilbath handpieces are less expensive to maintain long-term, but require additional oiling through an oil hole screw at the start of the day and must be checked every two-three hours.
Oil bath handpieces available – SureGrip.

Pin VS Worm?
This is the fitting where the handpiece connects on to the driveshaft of the machine.

Pin Fitting also known as Bayonet
Traditionally machines were pin drive, which connects to a visible slot on the bayonet end on the inner drive. It is most commonly used with flexible drives as it offers a positive connection and cannot inadvertently release between sheep. These are still used on many new machines.

Worm Fitting also known as Spline
Worm drive is the latest technology that allows for quick release and automatically disconnects should any debris obstruct the handpiece or drive and cause a lock-up, which acts as an extra safety measure. More commonly used with solid driveshafts.

When buying a handpiece to fit your existing machine, or vice versa, it is important to order the correct fitting. See image below:

Which comb should I choose?
Our Longhorn® combs are expertly crafted to precise specifications and glide along the skin, whilst cutting effortlessly. We supply a large, yet refined range of combs suitable for sheep, cattle, alpacas and more. Only premium quality, high chromium steel is used, ensuring our combs are durable and retain their sharpness for longer.

Why choose a Wide Comb?
Wide combs are our most popular comb for general purpose sheep shearing. They are available in a variety of widths and bevels to suit all shearers. Left handed options also available. Our most popular size choice is either a 92 or 94mm width, with a 3.5mm Short Bevel.

Why choose a Standard Comb?
Standard combs are perfect for dagging and belly clipping. The straight teeth and medium bevel enters the wool with ease. Also a popular comb for clipping dirty cattle. 76mm Width and Medium Bevel.

Setting up comb & cutter
How many sheep can I shear before changing the comb and cutter?
This depends on a number of factors, including:
  • Breed of sheep / openness of fleece.
  • Whether sticky/greasy.
  • Sand/grit in the fleece.
  • Correct setting up of handpiece.
  • Frequency of oiling comb and cutter.

The range would be from less than 5, if shearing sandy sheep, up to 50 in good conditions on open wool sheep.
Which oil should I use?
For sheep shearing machines we would recommend SAE 30 oil.
